Angela McCray-Hancock named new Middle School head

Maumee Valley Country Day School today announced the hiring of Angela McCray-Hancock as the school's new head for the Middle School (grades 4-8). She begins July 1.
Here is today's message from Head of School Lynn Casto:

It is with great excitement that I announce that Angela McCray-Hancock has accepted the position of Head of Middle School for the 2024-2025 school year and will begin July 1. Mrs. McCray-Hancock’s work history and philosophy very clearly align with Maumee Valley’s mission and vision to be Personal, Experiential, and Global. Throughout her interview process, it became abundantly clear that Mrs. McCray-Hancock has the educational philosophy, experience, and skill to thoughtfully move our Middle School curriculum and culture forward.

“I am beyond excited to join the Maumee Valley community! I feel incredibly fortunate to be welcomed into such a special place,” Mrs. McCray-Hancock said. “It is clear from my conversations and visiting the campus that it is the inclusive, experiential, and global community that provides students with the opportunity to explore their passions. I look forward to serving and leading the Middle School.”

With nearly 30 years of experience as a teacher and administrator in independent and public schools both in the United States and overseas, Mrs. McCray-Hancock has taught in England, Japan, Costa Rica, California, Michigan, and North Carolina. She earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and her master’s degree in educational leadership, both from Oakland University. Mrs. McCray-Hancock has experience as a 4th-8th grade teacher specializing in math and science.

In addition, she has also served as an assistant principal, Lower and Middle School director of curriculum and instruction, and STEM coordinator. Most recently, Mrs. McCray-Hancock served as the K-8 Academic Dean–with a year as interim Middle School Head–at Canterbury School in Greensboro, NC. While serving in administrative roles, Mrs. McCray-Hancock implemented initiatives such as a one-to-one technology program and a Positive Behavioral Supports program. She also led Canterbury School’s reaccreditation process.

Raised in Detroit, Mrs. McCray-Hancock is excited to be back in the Midwest and closer to family. An avid traveler, Mrs. McCray-Hancock has visited 26 countries. A lover of hiking, pickleball, and outdoor activities, her adventurous spirit will be a welcome addition to our Middle School team.

I want to publicly thank Katie Aubry and Lauren Lake for their excellent service as co-interim heads over the past year and for what they will do through the end of this year. Both plan to return to their full-time teaching positions starting in the fall.

Please join me in welcoming Angela McCray-Hancock to the Maumee Valley community!
